Oosouji is a Japanese word that literally means cleanliness, although it does not only refer to the cleanliness of our environment, but also to cleanliness of the mind.
From Lasose Properties & Investments we´re going to explain what this thousand year old cleaning consists of.
The Oosouji is a ritual that is normally carried out every 28th December in Japan, with the aim of expelling all the bad things that we have accumulated during the year and to start the new year free of bad habits and bad practices, and able to forget everything negative.
For the Japanese, it’s very negative to let unfinished business linger, so they also make the most of this time to settle old scores and start again from scratch.
To carry out the Oosouji you’ll need to block out an entire day, as it consists of deep cleaning the whole house and will therefore take a fair amount of time to carry out.
To start off properly, the first thing to do is to organize everything you will need to do the clean, so that when you begin you do not lose time or get interrupted unnecessarily.
Before cleaning, you have to air out your space, and the best thing to do is to start first thing in the morning, avoiding distractions with your mobile phone (it’s best to put it on silent) and with the aid of music, albeit one that doesn’t distract, since the aim of this cleaning is to live in the present, the “here and now”.
Go from room to room, moving only from one to another once you have finished. You have to clean from top to bottom, without forgetting ceilings and walls. Clean in depth and take advantage of this exhaustive cleaning to get rid of everything that is old, broken or not needed.
The Oosouji can be considered a therapy, which allows us to achieve mental order through the physical order in the house and the domestic cleaning. In fact, this thousand year old ritual is not only limited to the home environment, but is also performed in offices, schools, etc., with the same objective: to reset our mind by getting rid of physical and mental burdens, thus promoting mental health.
