English Cohousing: what is it and what are the projects in Spain?

The concept of Cohousing began in the 60s in northern European countries, since when it has gradually been implemented in our country.

The concept of Cohousing began in the 60s in northern European countries, since when it has gradually been implemented in our country.

At Lasose Properties & Investments we explain what Cohousing is and what projects we can currently find in our country.

Cohousing or its translation in Spanish as “collaborative housing” is increasingly becoming a new alternative to traditional housing, as it is a housing model based on combining private spaces with common areas.

Although this way of life may seem very similar to coliving, the main difference is really that in Cohousing, the people who live in this community promote collaborative consumption, as they themselves are both the promoters of these dwellings and the end users.

In our country there are already several projects in existence, such as the ‘Puerto de la Luz’ project in Malaga, or the first Cohousing Asturias, which are comprised of terraced houses. In Zamora there is a project that includes flats and duplexes in Villalpando, in Granada there is another project with flats, and in Cantabria a Cohousing project of chalets in Guriezo has been set up.

In large cities such as Madrid and Barcelona there are some projects pending construction: such as the Talco Building in the district of Villaverde. In Barcelona a housing project very close to the Catalan capital, in the Maresme, is starting up, a first phase in the Alzina Building. Construction is scheduled to start in early 2022 and includes 12 properties, including flats and penthouses.

The interest Cohousing is currently sparking is caused by the difficulties many people face in buying a home, as well as the need to find properties that adapt to the new needs of today. e The requirement for outdoor space and communal services is particularly important, as well as the possibility to live further away from the urban centres after the pandemic.
